Botox for Plantar Fasciitis Sherman Oaks

Botox for Plantar Fasciitis is a silver bullet for tackling this painful condition, which sidelines nearly 10% of people at least once in their lives. The pain, centered on the heel’s underside, is often at its worst when you’re getting back on your feet in the morning. While the discomfort might ease after a few steps, it tends to rear its ugly head during long walks, stair climbing, or running.

A single Botox injection into the plantar fascia can provide lasting relief by paralyzing the surrounding muscles and deactivating Substance P, a pain-related neurotransmitter. Studies show that most cases remain in remission for up to a year, making this treatment a highly effective and often permanent solution for plantar fasciitis.

What is Botox for Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that causes heel pain, especially when you take those first steps in the morning. While physical therapy, steroid injections, and orthotics are the usual go-to treatments, recent studies show that Botox might be a game-changer. It’s been found to help ease the pain and improve foot function for people dealing with plantar fasciitis.

Botox works by temporarily paralyzing specific muscles, reducing strain on the plantar fascia, and alleviating pain. While not typically a first-line treatment, it is considered for patients who haven’t responded to conventional therapies. Many studies have found Botox injections to be more effective than placebos or steroids in treating plantar fasciitis.

    How the Procedure Works

Injection of Botox or similar neuromodulators such as Dysport, Daxxify, Jeuveau, Daxxify, or Xeomin relaxes the tense muscle on the bottom of the foot that attaches to the anterior portion of the bottom of the heel. The pulling of the muscle causes irritation and pain at the attachment site of the fascia to the bone, even sometimes contributing to the growth of bone spurs. The resulting relaxation of the muscle after Botox stops the constant tugging of the muscle against the fascia and the fascia against the bone, reducing the pain and allowing the injured areas to heal.

    Before & Preparation

    • There is no need for preparation for this procedure. However, it’s a good idea to have clean feet to reduce the risk of infection from a needle puncture through the skin.
    • Staying off of blood thinning agents such as alcohol, fish oils, and pain meds such as Advil, ibuprofen, Motrin, and Aleve will help in reducing bleeding during the procedure, or bruising afterward.
    • Discuss your health concerns with your doctor ahead of time.
    • Avoid treatment during pregnancy as there are no safety studies of Botox during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
      • Avoid alcohol consumption 24 hours prior to the procedure;

      During the Procedure

      • One of our expert providers will evaluate you to ensure that you are a good candidate for this procedure.
      • The area of injection will be cleaned and prepped for your procedure.
      • Comfort modalities such as topical creams, ice, vibration devices, or zimmer (cryo cold air blowing device) are offered.
      • A small needle (same size as those used on the face) will be inserted into the appropriate area and Botox or the like will be injected at one or two sites. (Takes less than one minute).
      • The area will be covered with a bandaid, and you will be discharged.

      Aftercare & Recovery

We recommend limited walking for 4 hours after your procedure as it’s best not to spread the botox into adjacent areas with pressure. While the spread won’t be harmful, avoiding it will give you better, more concentrated results with better longevity.

        Botox for Plantar Fasciitis FAQs

Does Botox help with plantar fasciitis?

Yes, it does. Once Botox is injected into the plantar fascia/muscles of the painful foot, the resulting relaxation reduces the pain that is present upon taking your first steps in the morning.

How many units of Botox for plantar fasciitis?

About 70-100 units of Botox or similar neuromodulators are required for treatment of plantar fasciitis.

Should I Try Botox for Plantar Fasciitis?

There is almost no risk to trying Botox to relieve Plantar fasciitis. If your pain is chronic or significant enough to bother you, then Botox is a great option to try as a form of treatment.

How much does Botox cost for Plantar Fasciitis?

The more Botox is used, usually the cost is higher. Usually about $1,000 to $1,500 per procedure. Our prices however are very competitive.

Can you have Botox for plantar fasciitis?

Yes, Botox is a great option to treat the cramping and pain of plantar fasciitis.

What are the side effects of Botox injections in the feet?

Depends on the site for injection. For plantar fasciitis, the muscles injected will relax and not allow the bending down of the toes as much as before. However, this side effect is very unlikely to impact walking or any major function of the foot.  As with any other puncturing of the skin, a rare risk of bruising or infection is also present.

What is the new name for plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciosis is the new name for plantar fasciitis. The change happened because -itis is a description of inflammation. However, it’s been found that inflammation is not as important of an etiology as other pathologies such as a decrease in collagen, micro-tears of the fascia, and scarring of the region.

What are the two 2 types of plantar fasciitis?

The two types of plantar fasciitis are 1-“acute”, a term that represents a sudden start of symptoms that would occur from an injury, and 2- “chronic”, which represents a condition that lasts over a long period of time.

        Can Botox cause neuropathy?

No. Neuropathy means the disease of neurons. However, Botox relaxes muscles through inhibition of acetylcholine re-uptake, which does not impact the nervous system.

Can Botox cause numbness in feet?

Botox relaxes the muscles that it’s injected into. While it does not impact any of the sensory nerves or sensations, sometimes the reduced movement of the muscle can be misinterpreted as numbness.

How effective is Botox for plantar fasciitis?

At least 6 reputable articles have published reliable data confirming the effectiveness of Botox. Currently, there are no articles or studies opposing the effectiveness of plantar fasciitis treatment with Botox or other neuromodulators.

Can you walk after plantar fasciitis injection?

A low amount of walking after plantar fasciitis treatment with Botox is fine. However, excessive walking can increase blood flow into the area, which can wash away the concentration and hence the effectiveness of Botox.

How long does Botox last for plantar fasciitis relief?

There are studies following up with patients 1 year after treatment, showing continued improvement in results. While there are no studies beyond that, it’s likely that the benefits can last much longer, even at two years time, as a recommendation has been made to repeat the Botox injection every 1-2 years if needed.

Am I a good candidate for Botox injections for plantar fasciitis?

As long as you are not pregnant, have no neuromuscular disease condition, and your condition has been diagnosed correctly as plantar fasciitis (not caused by sudden injury or other pathologies), then you may be a good candidate for this treatment. We recommend a consultation with our team for a more customized evaluation.
