PNEEQ Eye Drops Dr Sherly Soleiman

What is Upneeq?

UPNEEQ is the first, and only FDA-approved prescription eye drops for acquired ptosis, otherwise known as low-lying eyelids. And even if your eyes aren’t low-lying, these drops are literally eye-opening and enhance the lift of your upper eyelids to open up your eyes even more. This also works for eyes that have gotten smaller with age.

By opening your eye, UPNEEQ also gives you a feeling of energy or a boost like a caffeinated drink, but without the caffeine or the jittery side effects! You may have noticed that the opposite is also true. When the eyelids aren’t in a lifted position, it can make us look tired or sad, have an asymmetrical eye shape, or cause other cosmetic concerns. The effects can go a long way, including it’s impact on your daily interactions. If you appear to be tired, people will talk to you as if you’re tired, which over time can actually make you subconsciously act or feel like you are tired. For those of us who have acquired lid ptosis (heavy eyelids) either due to genetic predisposition or because of age, it doesn’t just affect the appearance of our eyes. It can also make daily activities more challenging such as reading, driving, and looking at a computer screen. UPNEEQ is an entirely innovative prescription eye drop for anyone who wants to open their eyes to a whole new world of possibilities!

How Long Does Upneeq Last?

On label, UPNEEQ is a prescription eye drop used to treat acquired ptosis (or low-lying eyelids) in adults. However, it can also be used for those who want a more lifted, wide, and white eye aesthetic. UPNEEQ significantly improves the upper field of vision in those with ptosis by lifting the upper eyelids quickly, safely, and without any severe side effects. UPNEEQ’s effect begins between five and fifteen minutes after application, reaches maximum impact at 2 hours, and can last between eight to ten hours. It’s generally used once a day.

What Does UPNEEQ Do?

UPNEEQ is used as a daily eye drop solution to enhance the eye appearance in those who want a bigger eye aesthetic and to treat acquired ptosis (low-lying eyelids) AKA acquired blepharoptosis. Most patients see a lifting effect with extremely fast results in as short as 5-10 minutes after application. In clinical trial studies, patients had the maximum impact of eyelid lift at two hours, and the results lasted for 8 hours. Additionally, UPNEEQ also helps patients see more, even on the first day of treatment. 87.8% of patients stated some level of improved vision, and 74% of patients said they had more than 50% improvement in vision on day 14. UPNEEQ is designed only to be used as an eyedrop to lift the eyelids. This solution should never be swallowed or ingested in any other way besides an eyedrop. Each vial of UPNEEQ contains enough solution for one treatment (one drop in each eye). However, we’ve found that there are usually more than just two drops in each container.

Does it Hurt?

There is no pain associated with the application of UPNEEQ if appropriately applied. However, do not let the vial tip touch your eyes, as pushing any plastic into the eye can be uncomfortable. The baseline ingredient of the eye drops is artificial tears, and hence side effects of irritation and redness are low.

Before Care

UPNEEQ is incredibly simple to apply and does not have an extensive list of before-care instructions. However, if you do wear contacts, we advise that you remove contact lenses before applying the UPNEEQ drops and wait 15-30 minutes before putting them back in. It’s a good idea to administer UPNEEQ with clean eyes so that you don’t accidentally move makeup into the eyes.

How to Apply UPNEEQ (How Long it Takes to Do the Procedure)

UPNEEQ Eye Drops for Droopy Eyelids

The application of UPNEEQ can be done in two easy steps. Twist away the plastic tip on the vial. Tilt the head back and apply one drop of UPNEEQ in each eye. Gently close your eyelids and roll your eyes around for one minute, trying to avoid pushing the drops out of your eyes. We call this the UPNEEQ meditation! You can then lift your head back up and go about your day! Use only once daily as it lasts 8 hours. Make sure not to let the tip of the vial touch your eye or other surfaces. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying UPNEEQ. Contact lenses can be placed back into the eyes 15-30 minutes after applying UPNEEQ. If you are using more than one topical ophthalmic drug, please allow fifteen minutes between applications of UPNEEQ and other medications.

Who is a Good Candidate for UPNEEQ?

It is commonly said that the eyes are the windows to the soul and everyone wants to appear as alert and attentive as possible at home and in their professional lives. If you are an adult who wants a wider, lifted, white eye appearance or are bothered by drooping or sleepy appearance, and especially if you struggle with a reduced field of vision due to hooded eyelids, then you are an excellent candidate for UPNEEQ. Also, if you regularly wear contact lenses, lash extensions, or look at a computer screen for long hours, you may subconsciously be squinting your eyelid muscles and can also possibly benefit from UPNEEQ as a strain prevention. The only caution is with patients who have narrow-angle glaucoma or those with allergies to any of the ingredients. We advise discussing any eye conditions with your healthcare provider to determine if UPNEEQ is safe for you.

Potential Risks & Side Effects

Female eye with long eyelashe

The risks and side effects of UPNEEQ are minimal, and in clinical trials, it has been proven to be safe and effective when used as directed. Since the baseline ingredient is made up of artificial tears, the product tends to be comfortable for most people. As with most other eyedrops, there is a low risk of reaction such as eye irritation, mild eye inflammation, eye redness, dry eye, blurred vision, instillation site pain, eye irritation, and headache. Let your provider know if you have heart disease, high or low blood pressure, or feel faint at rest or when quickly standing up because in rare cases, UPNEEQ can affect your blood pressure. Also, let your provider know if you take any antidepressants in the class of monoamine oxidase inhibitors, as they may affect the way your body absorbs the medication. The product is not ingested but instead applied topically, which makes these systemic side effects extremely rare.

FAQs

What does UPNEEQ do?

UPNEEQ is used as a daily eye drop solution to open up the eyes and make them whiter. It is FDA approved to treat acquired ptosis (low-lying eyelids). With speedy results, many patients see improvement in as little as 5-10 minutes. In clinical trial studies, patients had the maximum lift in their eyelids at two hours, and the results lasted for eight hours. Additionally, UPNEEQ also helps patients see more, even on the first day of treatment. 87.8% of patients stated some level of improved vision, and 74% of patients said they had more than 50% improvement in vision on day 14. This solution should never be swallowed or ingested in any other way besides an eyedrop. Each vial of Upneeq is designed to have enough UPNEEQ solution for one treatment of one drop in each eye. However, we have found that there are generously more drops in those tubes than just one.

What is UPNEEQ used for?

UPNEEQ eye drops are suitable for opening the eyes, making them look larger and more white! They are FDA-approved to treat low-lying eyelids, a condition caused by acquired blepharoptosis in adults. These revolutionary eye drops are preservative-free and formulated with hypromellose to coat and protect the ocular surface. UPNEEQ works by contracting the muller’s muscle, opening the eye for a more youthful, refreshed appearance.

What should I tell my provider before beginning treatment?

Make sure to let your provider know if you have acute angle glaucoma, heart disease, high or low blood pressure, or feel faint at rest or when quickly standing up, because there’s a low risk of UPNEEQ affecting blood pressure. Also, let your provider know if you take any antidepressants in the class of monoamine oxidase inhibitors, as they may affect the way your body absorbs the medication. These side effects are rare because UPNEEQ is applied topically and not ingested/injected, so systemic symptoms are not expected.

Is UPNEEQ over the counter?

No. UPNEEQ is a prescription strength product that can be purchased at Cosmetic Injectables Center after the patient receives medical clearance from a physician. If you are interested in UPNEEQ, please call us at 818-322-0122 to schedule your consultation today.

What is acquired ptosis?

Acquired ptosis can affect adults of all ages but occurs more frequently as we age. When the muscles in the eyelids stretch and weaken over time, our eyelids can droop as a result. There are many reasons a person could have acquired ptosis (low-lying eyelids), including conditions resulting from a stroke or brain aneurysm, eye infections, eye tumors, Horner syndrome, or myasthenia gravis. However, UPNEEQ can work in those with or without ptosis as well.

How many hours does UPNEEQ last?

A single application of UPNEEQ eye drops lasts between 8-10 hours, and its indicated dosage is for once daily usage. After 8-10 hours, your eyes will return to their original appearance.

How long does UPNEEQ take to work?

UPNEEQ eye drops are fast-acting and can begin to work as early as 5-15 minutes after application. The maximum impact is at 2 hours after application and results can last about 8 hours.

How often should you use UPNEEQ?

The prescribed dosage for UPNEEQ is a once-daily convenient eyedrop.

The application consists of one drop per eye while tilting your head back and absorbing the solution for 30-60 seconds.

Is UPNEEQ the same as Visine?

No, Visine is intended to reduce redness and moisturize the eyes. While the base liquid of UPNEEQ is artificial tears, its main effect is to open up and lift the upper eyelids as well as to make the white of the eyes more white and shiny. Visine is over-the-counter and only used to reduce redness and irritation of the eyes, but it does not lift the eyelids. UPNEEQ is a prescription medication used specifically for the temporary widening and opening of the upper eyelid and enhancing the white show.

Is UPNEEQ FDA approved?

In July 2020, UPNEEQ (oxymetazoline hydrochloride ophthalmic solution) achieved FDA approval to lift droopy, low-lying eyelids (Acquired ptosis) in adults.

What’s the Difference Between UPNEEQ vs. Lumify?

While Lumify (an over-the-counter medication) can make the white of the eye more white, it does not lift the eyelids or have any impact on increasing the size of the eyes. UPNEEQ can only be purchased from a doctor’s office. It not only makes the white of the eyes more white, but it also lifts the lids to make the eyes look wider, lifted, and more awake.
