Radiesse Sherman Oaks

Another injectable that appeared on the market lately is the Radiesse filler. Compared to the other fillers such Juvederm Ultra Plus, Restylane, Perlane, and Belotero, Radiesse is thicker. However, this filler is thinner than Volux and Voluma.

If you are looking for a holistic approach to facial rejuvenation, Radiesse is here to give you immediate volumizing results and natural collagen production. Radiesse stands out with its calcium-based formula used to reduce the appearance of pre-jowl folds and contouring the face and jawline.

What is Radiesse?

Radiesse is an injectable made of Calcium Hydroxyapatite microspheres suspended in a gel carrier made of carboxymethylcellulose. The filler is a bit thicker than most other Hyaluronic Acids such as Juvederm Ultra Plus, Restylane, Perlane, and Belotero ,but thinner than Volux and Voluma. Similar to other firm fillers, Radiesse can have drastic results. It can also stimulate collagen production, contour the cheeks and jawline, and has been FDA-approved to correct volume loss on the hands.

Radiesse received FDA approval for the correction of facial fat loss in HIV patients and moderate folds and wrinkles such as nasolabial folds. Radiesse Plus comes pre-mixed with Xylocaine (a numbing solution).

  • Lasts 9 – 12 months on average

The results from Radiesse last longer than some other fillers, usually from 9-12 months. You can notice an immediate improvement in the skin volume on the day of your appointment. However, Radiesse does cause a lot of temporary swelling that will resolve over 2-4 weeks.

Side Effects & Risks

Common side effects when it comes to Radiesse include swelling, bruising, redness, itching, and pain. However, the appearance of nodules is a concern that patients have if an inexperienced injector treats the wrong areas (under the eyes or lips). There are three main types of nodules:

  • Filler Material Clumps (When the filler is injected in areas of circular muscles, it can clump and develop a nodule);
  • Inflammatory Nodules (rare, due to immune response);
  • “Biofilm” and Bacterial Nodules (rare, due to immune response or infections);

Due to the inability to dissolve Radiesse particles instantly, it is of paramount importance to seek experienced injectors for the application of Radiesse.  At Cosmetic Injectables Center, our providers are very knowledgeable and have years of experience. Our medical director, Dr Sherly Soleiman is faculty for reputable industry-leading injectables companies such as Allergan (who makes Botox and Juvederm) and teaches nationally.  If you have nodules from a Radiesse procedure, our team at Cosmetic Injectables Center can help you by using thiosulfate enzyme, steroids, and 5FU injections.

Radiesse FAQs

What should you not do after a Radiesse injection?

After a Radiesse injection, do not rub the area of injection unless advised to do so.  That includes sleeping on it or making extreme facial expressions. If redness and bruising occur, you should use cold compresses or go to your provider for bruising of the laser (at Cosmetic Injectables Center we offer this complimentary).

How long does it take for Radiesse to settle in?

While Radiesse isn’t a hyaluronic acid-based filler, you can still notice immediate improvement the same day. However, the final results that include collagen stimulation and resolution of swelling are later in about 3-4 weeks.

Can I exercise after Radiesse injections?

Exercising after Radiesse injections isn’t recommended. If you avoid strenuous activity during the first week, your blood pressure will stay within normal ranges and swelling and bruising will be minimized.

Can I sleep on my face after Radiesse?

Sleeping on the injected area isn’t recommended the first week post-treatment. Sleeping on the face will create pressure, and therefore, can move the filler or cause more bruising. Healthcare practitioners suggest sleeping on the back for the first 3 to 4 nights.

How long does Radiesse really last?

Radiesse usually lasts about one year.  However, some people break it down faster while others hold on to the results a lot longer.  It’s best to wait and decide on treatment based on how fast your results dissipate.

Does radiesse make you look younger?

Yes, it does. When used by experienced injectors, Radiesse can lift the cheeks, define the jawline, and fill in lines and folds to create a younger, more youthful look.

Does Radiesse really build collagen?

Yes.  There have been many studies that have confirmed and microscopically shown “neogenesis” and “collagenesis” which help firm up the skin and promote collagen production.

Should I get Radiesse or Sculptra?

This depends on your goal.  If you are looking to enhance collagen, Sculptra is more effective.  However, Sculptra is slower to respond to volume enhancement.  Both are not instantly reversible.

What are the benefits of Radiesse injections?

Radiesse is thick in consistency and white in color, making it effective at hiding veins and providing structural support. It stimulates collagen, making the surrounding skin firmer, and can be used for contouring the cheeks and jawline, correcting volume loss on the hands, and smoothing wrinkles. Hyperdilute Radiesse is a thinner version used mainly for collagen stimulation instead of volumization.

Should I massage radiesse?

Do not massage the area of treatment with Radiesse unless specifically instructed by your provider.  You do not want to spread or change the shape of the product from where it was placed.  If there is an unwanted nodule, your provider may advise to gently massage it out.

What are the disadvantages of Radiesse Injections?

Radiesse is a calcium-based product that cannot be reversed instantly.  While it has a reversing agent called sodium thiosulfate, it can take days to weeks for it to break down Radiesse.

Can Radiesse lift the jawline?

Radiesse and Volux are great products for jawline contour and enhancement.  However, Volux lasts longer and can be instantly reversed.  Radiesse on the other hand can stimulate collagen.  They each have their own important benefits.

Is Radiesse better than Juvederm?

Radiesse is a thick calcium-based filler while Juvederm is a family of hyaluronic acid fillers made of different consistencies.  Radiesse is not instantly reversible but stimulates collagen. Juvederm line of fillers all are reversible with an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

Does radiesse look better over time?

Radiesse initially swells for 1 to 4 weeks.  Depending on how you like the appearance of swelling, you may be happy or disappointed when your swelling goes down.  It takes about a year for Radiesse to break down.

Is one syringe of Radiesse enough?

 Normally, 1 to 2 syringes are an appropriate amount per visit for the upper cheeks.  For Jawline enhancement, 2-4 syringes may be more suitable.  For areas treated with hyperdilute Radiesse, it depends on the surface area being treated.

How much is one syringe of Radiesse?

Radiesse syringes consist of 1.5 ml filler compared to 1.0 of most other syringes.  The cost of Radiesse is about $750 to $1,000 per syringe. Our prices are competitive in the Los Angeles area.

What is better than radiesse?

Depending on your goals, Sculptra can elicit more collagen, Juvederm Volux XC can last longer and is reversible (Radiesse is not instantly reversible), and for lips, softer hyaluronic acids such as Juvederm Ultra XC work better.

What happens when radiesse wears off?

When Radiesse wears off, the area of treatment goes back to its original shape.  However, it may still have enhanced collagen in the area.

Why not use Radiesse?

Radiesse is a great product that can stimulate collagen and enhance volume.  However, it cannot be instantly reversed. Also, it can cause a few weeks of excess swelling.

Is Radiesse a hyaluronic acid-based filler?

Radiesse is an injectable made of Calcium Hydroxyapatite microspheres suspended in a gel carrier made of carboxymethylcellulose. The filler is a bit thicker than most other Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm Ultra Plus, Restylane, Perlane, and Belotero and is not easily reversible like those agents.
