Restylane-L is versatile for use in many areas including perioral, lips, and nasolabial folds. While off label for the upper half of the face, it is the most common product used for under eye hollows. Restylane Lyft is specifically engineered and FDA-approved to increase fullness and combat wrinkles in the cheeks, mid-face, and the tops of hands.

What Is Restylane Best Used For?

Restylane is a hyaluronic acid-based filler. It is FDA approved and often used to treat lines and volume deficiencies in the lower half of the face. However, one of its most common uses is its off-label improvement of under eye hollows as it causes the least amount of Tyndal discoloration, superficial water retention, and possible nodules. It is also easily reversible with an enzyme called hyaluronidase (Hylenex or Vitrase.) Restylane-l lips is an effective treatment and can smooth and add volume to the lips or cheek areas. Restylane is useful in large areas and/or areas that need volume.

What Restylane is best for Lips?

Restylane-L, Restylane Silk, and Restylane Kyss are good choices for lip enhancement. Restylane-L is useful for enhancing lip volume, lifting corners of the mouth, correcting moderate to severe shadows in the nasolabial folds, and treating marionette lines. Restylane Silk helps to minimize wrinkles and lines on and around the lips as well as surrounding superficial creases. It helps to create a silky, smooth-looking, hydrated lip texture. Restylane Kyss has the best of both worlds – it gives the proper firmness to provide support to the lips, but also the perfect level of softness to allow lips to remain soft and tender. It also lasts 12 months as opposed to Juvederm Ultra, which only lasts 6-9 months. The only risk is that this product may result in more cases of lumps than Juvederm.

Does Restylane-L Work Immediately?

Restylane starts working immediately. After approximately two weeks, the product should be settled and final results should be visible. As with any injection, there may be mild side effects from Restylane treatments such as bruising, redness, and swelling. These side effects should dissipate entirely within two weeks of treatment. After this point, it is easier to reliably see the final effects of your Restylane-L treatment.

Can You Use Restylane Under Eyes?

While Restylane is not yet FDA approved for use in the under-eyes, it is the most common product of choice for that area. Because of its lower risk of Tyndal (bluish discoloration under the skin from hyaluronic acid fillers), nodules, and water retention, it is known to work great under the delicate skin of tear troughs and for treatment of under eye hollowing (i.e. the dark circles underneath the eyes). Restylane is also typically used as a treatment for facial wrinkles and folds of the lower half of the face, including the lip area, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines. Restylane-L (and other Restylane treatments) can increase the volume and fullness in the targeted area, and diminish the signs of aging. Under the eyes, this increase in volume can help correct a sunken and hollow appearance.

What Should You Not Do After Restylane?

After your Restylane treatment, you should avoid any exposure to intense heat (via the sun, sun lamps, hot showers, or sauna) to reduce swelling. To reduce risk of increased bruising, patients can avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. ibuprofen), St. John’s wort, and high doses of vitamin E. Follow your cosmetic provider’s instructions for the best results.

Restylane treatments are nonsurgical and minimally invasive. When done by a trained cosmetic professional, these treatments can be very comfortable and comparable to receiving acupuncture. Any pain from swelling usually dissipates within a few days. Additionally, some bruising and redness may appear at the site, which should resolve within two weeks of your treatment. If you are very sensitive or have anxiety, Nitrous gas can be used for its calming and pain relief effects. Topical numbing creams are also available and can be applied 30 minutes prior to your procedure. For lip injections, a dental block can help prevent any sensation of filler administration into the lips. Ice packs, vibrations modalities, and squeeze balls can also be good resources during the procedure.

Can Restylane Last Years?

Sometimes yes. But typically, Restylane treatments only last between six and nine months. When used to treat the lip area, results usually dissipate faster (five to six months) due to the high mobility and higher concentration of natural hyaluronidase enzyme in the area. In the tear troughs however, Restylane treatments may last longer, even over a year, as a result of there being little movement in the area.

Which Facial Filler Lasts the Longest?

The facial fillers that last the longest are Sculptra, Juvederm Voluma and some features of Radiesse. Juvederm Voluma can be used in the cheeks and has been shown in clinical trial studies to last up to two years. Sculptra does not have a volumizing gel but is rather a collagen boosting product that stimulates collagen production, which then results in growth of volume over 6 weeks. It takes the body about 2 years to break down the naturally developed collagen. Radiesse has features of both where it can volumize in and of itself (lasting about a year) and it also mildly stimulates collagen growth for longer lasting effects (up to 2 years).

Does Restylane Improve Over Time?

Restylane is a non-permanent, minimally invasive treatment. Restylane-L fillers are hyaluronic acid-based and dissolve over time. On average, Restylane treatment results last approximately six to nine months. Some patients choose to get additional treatments to maintain their results. In some cases however, as the product breaks down, it can move into a more superficial layer in the skin which can attract water and appear as if it is expanding in size. If the result of such phenomenon is unfavorable, the product can easily be melted with hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid fillers instantly.

What Age Should You Get Fillers?

There is no “right” age to get fillers. Everyone ages differently and has different “problem areas.” For example, some younger individuals have under-eye hollowing due to genetics and can benefit from treatment as young as 18. However, the range in which most women get facial fillers is between 35 and 54 years of age.
