TREATING LIP LINES WITH BOTOX:
Injection of small amounts of Botox into the muscles around the lips relaxes them. Since much of lip lines are due to hyperactivity of the Orbicularis Oris muscle (responsible for pursing the lip around a straw, or cigarette), the decreased lip contraction can help soften the creases and avoid the etching of the folding lines into the skin. The pros to this procedure are that it can act as “speech therapy” to teach us to speak without over-utilizing these muscles (this can have long term benefits), it is inexpensive (minimal units of botox are necessary), it decreases the lip lines, and it also has a volumizing effect on lip size & shape.
The cons are that the muscle effect only lasts about 6 weeks, it can make the lips feel a little bit numb (pronouncing the letters B and P will be softer), and that drinking from a straw will be difficult (which can actually be considered a benefit).
TREATING LIP LINES WITH FILLERS:
Lip lines can be treated either by injecting them directly (using soft thin fillers such as Restylane silk or Volbella) or by enhancing the body or border of the lips (using thicker fillers). Our injectors can help assess your unique lips to determine which product and which placement will achieve the results you are looking for.
TREATING LIP LINES WITH NOVATHREADS, MICRONEEDLING, AND LASERS:
Thickening and firming up the skin is treating the actual problem as opposed to camouflaging it. However, this is the slowest process of all alternatives. Since we cannot yet inject elastin and collagen into the outer layer of the skin, we need to stimulate the skin to reproduce these proteins. The different methods we can use to achieve this are explained here.
LIP VOLUME & SHAPE
LIP SHAPE & VOLUME ENHANCEMENT USING FILLERS:
To start with, the most accepted ratio for natural looking lip proportion is a 1/3 upper lip to 2/3 lower lip ratio, except for African Americans where a 1 to 1 ratio is more common. In younger individuals, the lip border and philtrum column are usually well defined and injecting them can create a protruded “duck” appearance. On the other hand, as we get older, we lose the definition of the lips and the “white roll” around them. Enhancement in these areas as well as the cupids bow can have a natural outcome without the overdone look. These general rules of thumb are modified for each individual based on lip shape, firmness, and desired results. Please see one of our master injector nurses for a more individualized recommendation.
A lot of people are fearful of lip enhancement because they’ve seen too many un-natural looking results. We understand and couldn’t agree more. It takes a keen eye to decide on the right type of filler, amount needed, and to correctly place it in each individual lip shape to achieve the patient’s desired shape, volume, and outcome.
LIP SHAPE & VOLUME ENHANCEMENT USING BOTOX:
Yes, you read that correctly. A small amount of Botox can be used to not only diminish and prevent lip lines, but to volumize the lip size. As explained above, Botox in this area has pros and cons.
LIFTING CORNERS WITH FILLERS:
Marionette lines – These are the lines that extend from the corners of the lips towards jaw line. They are not just corner of the mouth. (Corner Of The Mouth) are long vertical wrinkles that traverse from the corners of the lips to the chin. The name is derived from Marionette puppets that have faces with long vertical creases. These creases could give a grim or sad look to the face. These lines occur with age, smoking and genetics and can progress to form jowls later on. It is possible to lift these corners with dermal filler by adding volume and anchoring the corners higher up. Procedure time is only 5 minutes.
There might be bruising or swelling, so maybe say most of the time there’s no downtime (especially if we use cannula). Procedure time is around 30 minutes and there is no downtime. Results are immediate and Corner Of The Mouth Filler will typically last 10-12 months. Possible mild injection-site swelling and bruising.
LIFTING CORNERS WITH BOTOX:
Muscles that pull the corner of the lips down can be relaxed to result in a lifting of the lip corners. Gravity is already pulling the corners of the lips down. By relaxing these muscles, you won’t have additional muscles pulling the lips down. This is a common procedure that usually has no impact on speech. The dose of botox in this area can range between 1 to 5 units on each side.
Botox in Lips FAQs
The initial results from Botox usually become visible within the first few days following treatment. The full results are typically visible after a week passes. Longevity generally depends on the number of Botox units used. However, since we want to maintain the ability to speak, the dosing strength is limited in this area. Hence, the results typically last about 6-8 weeks give or take.
Lip Flip is the procedure where small amounts of Botox are used in the lips to achieve an everted, fuller, yet natural-looking pout.
Current FDA approved fillers for the lips (ie Juvederm Ultra, Volbella, Restylane Silk, Restylane Kiss, Restylane L, and Belotero amongst others) are all composed of hyaluronic acids and last anywhere from 3 months to one year. However, they are instantly and easily reversible with an enzyme if removal is desired at any time.
The cost of Botox injections in any area of the body can vary drastically. Factors that can influence the price of a procedure include the number of units used, the number of areas treated, the cosmetic provider’s experience, the quality of customer service, and their practice’s location. Lip Botox can cost between $20 to $50 while filler injections usually range in price from $500 to $2,000 (fillers last much longer than Botox). You may want to schedule a consultation with your provider to decide which procedure is right for you and get an estimate of the cost.
Lip flip (procedures in which Botox or similar muscle relaxants are injected into the lip border and the Cupid’s bow) typically requires about 2-10 units of Botox to be effective. Results from this treatment commonly last 6-8 weeks, unless more units are used. However, the stronger dosage can impact speech, depending on your level of lip animation.
Botox is a noninvasive, FDA-approved cosmetic treatment for frown lines, crows feet, and forehead. Other areas of the face such as lips are commonly treated off-label. When administered by a licensed and experienced cosmetic provider, Botox and other lip injections are considered to be safe and effective. Some patients may experience mild side effects such as swelling, bruising, or a slight feeling of numbness in the lips. The pronunciation of the letters “B” and “P” may be a bit softer, as is the ability to purse lips around a straw. But these side effects are generally well tolerated and diminish within a couple of weeks. Fillers, on the other hand, do not impact the muscles of the lips and have no impact on speech.
Botox works by inhibiting muscle contractions in targeted areas. Because movements are limited, facial wrinkles and fine lines are relaxed. Additionally, Botox can be used to weaken the muscles that pull lip corners downwards (depressor anguli oris) and hence result in lifting the corners of the mouth. This is a different procedure than a “lip flip” or a “lip filler” so be sure to request it from your provider separately.
A lip flip is a procedure in which Botox (or a similar substance such as Dysport, Jeuveau, or Xeomin) is injected into the borders and the Cupid’s bow of the lips. The results from this procedure typically last between 6-8 weeks and are not considered to be permanent.
Cosmetic providers focus on helping you attain your appearance goals. Usually, patients want to achieve a more natural appearance from their lip treatments. Lips that are treated using fillers should feel natural, even when kissing. During the first few days following treatments, lips may feel a little tighter, but this will diminish over a short period.
Lip flip using Botox can reduce the strength in pursing the lips. However, the ability of kissing and oral sex will be maintained.
There is no way to permanently plump your lips on your own, but many people try DIY “lip plumping” treatments, like applying a mixture of cayenne and olive oil to their lips and following up with lip balm. These “treatments” are temporary. It may be a good idea to look into lip fillers and Botox injections for longer-lasting safe results and approach to lip plumping.
Typically, Botox is not used as a singular treatment for vertical lip lines. Often, cosmetic providers choose to inject lip fillers and/or Novathreads along with Botox to plump the skin and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Lip fillers add volume, while Botox relaxes the muscles, helping to smooth the skin further, and Novathreads/microneedling can enhance collagen and firm the skin.
Botox can be used to effectively to treat fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, Botox, lip fillers, and Collagen stimulating agents such as Novathreads and microneedling can be used to smooth out lip lines and add volume to the lip area, which can make you look younger overall. This is because as we age, we lose lip volume and develop lip lines. When administered by a licensed cosmetic provider, Botox, fillers, Novathreads, and microneedling are all considered safe, minimally invasive cosmetic procedures.
Everyone ages differently and everyone’s signs of aging take different forms. This is because of genetic factors as well as extrinsic factors such as sun exposure. Botox is commonly used by patients starting around the age of 30, but some people in their mid-20s decide to pursue Botox as a preventative treatment as well.
The short answer is yes; lip fillers can be used to change your smile and move the lip corners up if requested. Lip fillers add volume to the lips, plumping them, which affects how your smile looks. Your cosmetic provider may suggest inserting lip fillers into the “parentheses” lines on either side of your mouth to help reduce your smile lines that are etching into the skin.
There are tons of lip filler variations, so you are almost guaranteed to find one that suits your needs. Lip fillers most commonly used in the USA are made of hyaluronic acids (examples include Juvederm and Restylane). While Juvederm Volbella can result in a lip gloss appearance and reduce lip lines, Juvederm Ultra XC can achieve that plus add a natural amount of volume. To achieve a significantly larger enhancement, multiple syringes of Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus can be administered intermittently with a few weeks or months of healing time in between injections.
In most cases, lips do return to their standard appearance after lip fillers are removed or naturally dissipated. If excessive amounts of lip fillers are used however, the skin on the lips may become stretched, but this is usually not the case with average volumes of injections.
