How to Build a Skincare Routine

Building a skincare routine is all about having a routine that you can easily maintain. In addition to the routine, curating a product cabinet that is formulated to benefit your specific skin type. To build a skincare regimen that will benefit you the most, you will need to:

  1. Know your skin type.
  2. Understand the order in which to apply your skincare.
  3. What products your skin needs.

Preserve your skin and youthful glow by caring for it now, and you will thank us for years to come. Your skin is the body’s largest organ; take care of it and it will take care of you.

Skin Type

The most important part of any skincare routine is determining what type of skin you have. You must first understand your skin before you can properly care for it. This will help you buy products that will treat your skin more efficiently. Here are some tips on how to identify the type of skin you have.

Normal

For individuals who have normal skin, you will not experience a lot of breakouts. You may have the odd blemish here and there, but for the most part, your skin will not negatively change with weather elements or skincare products. Plus, you will not have a feeling of constant dryness or oil. You may even notice how firm your skin appears. Those with normal skin will not have to invest in special products for sensitive, oily, or dry skin. Your skin will be able to tolerate a number of ingredients, allowing you to use a wide variety of skincare products. Which will allow you to experiment to find just the right skincare products for your daily routine.

Dry

There are two things you should know about here; There is dry skin and dehydrated skin. They are different issues but have similar symptoms. It will be important that you can tell them apart so you can treat your skin appropriately.

  • Dehydrated – This is where the skin does not have enough moisture. The skin will feel tight, and fine lines will be noticeable. This type of skin will have a paper-like texture. A good example is horizontal neck lines.
  • Dryness – Dry skin occurs when there is not enough oil produced by the skin. This can result in sensitive, itching, and flaky skin. It may also cause the skin to crack easily. This may also be caused by skin conditions such as eczema or environmental conditions.

For dry skin, you will need to moisturize several times a day. Moist air in your home will also help. In addition, you will want to avoid any type of harsh products, including those that have fragrances.

For skin that is dehydrated, you will want water-based products. Oil-based products will make things worse for you. Also, make sure that you drink plenty of water.

How To Build A Skincare Routine

Oily

Individuals with oily skin may look like they have a glow to them, but this is not a good thing. If you have oily skin then you may be familiar with products such as mattifying powders or blotting sheets to help cut the excess oils. Those who have oily skin may have larger pores that are visible.

People who have oily skin will not have a lot of fine lines and wrinkles. However, you will need to take care in choosing your skincare products. You will want to avoid anything that has alcohol in it, petroleum and mineral oil. Products that are labeled “non-comedogenic” are good for those who have oily skin, as these products do not contain ingredients that will clog pores.

Also, people with skin that produces above average amounts of oil may be under the impression that they should not moisturize. In fact, the opposite is true. Moisturizing properly will signal your skin to stop over producing oil. You also don’t want to over-wash your face to remove excess oil. Once you get into a normal routine you will see your oily skin level out.

Sensitive

Sensitive skin is pretty apparent. It typically gives you signs such as:

  • Irritated patches, flakiness, or excessive dryness.
  • Frequent rashes.
  • Reactions to products with fragrance.
  • Skin flushing.
  •  Burning or stinging after using a skincare product.

You will want to choose your skincare products carefully if you have sensitive skin. Never use products that contain irritants such as alcohol or fragrances. Search for some products that are specifically designed for sensitive skin and have fewer additives.

Acne-Prone

If you breakout often, then you have acne-prone skin. Clogged pores make you more susceptible to blemishes than other skin types. For instance, you can have dry or oily skin and still be prone to acne.

For acne-prone skin, you will want to seek out products that are formulated for acne. Moisturizers and exfoliants will be an important part of your routine to help decrease breakouts and lighten acne scars.

Combination

Chances are, you may have already said, “That sounds like me” by this point if you are experiencing combination skin. People with Combination skin have multiple areas on their face with contrasting symptoms to the others. Some people may be oily in their “T-zone” area and dry across their cheeks. Combination skin can make skincare a bit tricky. However, with this type of skin, you will want to avoid ingredients you don’t want for each of your skin types. You will want a balance. You may find some products are designed for combination skin, which is perfect for you!

Mature

Everyone is different when it comes to aging. Signs of aging may include:

  • Wrinkles
  • Dryness
  • Dehydration
  • Dark spots
  • Dullness
  • Sunspots

If you have mature skin, preventing further damage is the most effective way to inhibit the signs of aging. Providing it with key ingredients to help with collagen production, and decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles are key. Utilizing products that help protect against environmental irritants that accelerate the aging process will help make the skin more supple.

Order To Apply Your Skincare

The sequence of your product will matter as it ensures your skin receives the full benefits of each product. Applying the skincare products in the correct order will allow you to see the true benefits of all your products and give you the best results.

What To Include In Your Skincare Routine?

It comes down to personal preference as to what products you choose to use. In this section, we will discuss the various types of products you will want to include in your daily routine.

Cleanser

Cleansers should always be the first step in your skincare routine. Cleansing removes dirt, oil, and makeup from your skin, priming it to properly absorb the remaining skincare products that you will apply. Keep in mind that you never want to use regular soap for this step, as its pH level is too basic and can dry out your skin.

Go for a cleanser that will target your overall skin concern. Here are some cleansers that we recommend trying:

Toner

Often overlooked, toners should be a regular or semi-regular part of your routine to help minimize pores, keep them clean and firm the skin. Toner also aids in preparing your skin for the products that follow. Good toners should be gentle on the skin. You will want to choose one that does not have an alcohol base, as it will help calm and heal the skin.

Exfoliant

An exfoliant should not be used daily, but one or two times a week to aid in the removal of dead surface skin revealed during the natural cell turnover process. This skin, if left on the surface can clog pores, contribute to acne, enhance the look of fine lines and create an uneven or rough texture. Home exfoliants should be gentle but effective. Exfoliating pads such as glycolic acid peel pads work to remove older skin, revealing the fresh, healthier skin beneath. Routine microderm abrasions and/or chemical peels are also an excellent way to keep the top layer of your skin looking its healthiest.

Eye Cream

If you are looking for a way to combat crow’s feet, puffiness or dark circles at home, adding eye cream into your daily skincare routine will be essential. An optional addition to your routine depending on your needs, a Retinol or peptide based eye cream will yield the most effective results.

Recommended products include:

  • Retinol Eye Cream – Reduce dark circles, promote collagen production to improve fine lines and wrinkles, and increase cellular turnover.
  • Pure Gold Eye Detoxifying Masque – Helps reduce puffiness, fine lines, and wrinkles around the eye area.

Serum

Facial serums are like vitamins for your skin. They can be applied daily and if treating a trouble area or signs of aging, it will be an essential part of your routine. Serums typically target specific issues. Some help to brighten skin as they hydrate, repair, and even help with anti-aging. Others may target trouble areas or address multiple skin issues. You can layer serums or choose one. The key to remember when applying serums; A little goes a long way.

Here are some serums you may want to try:

  • Brightening Vitamin C Serum – Helps to lighten and brighten skin, improves skin tone, texture, and firmness. Works to protect against cell damage and accelerate cell turnover.
  • Bio-Active Growth Factor Serum – Helps in minimizing the appearance of expression lines and wrinkles, supports thin, fragile skin, and improves skin elasticity.
  • Firming Hydropeptide Serum – Plumps and nourishes the skin for a smooth texture.
  • Skin Balancing Glow Serum – A topical probiotic supporting the microbiome. It helps to diffuse the look of redness, treat skin irregularities, and wrinkles.
  • Advanced RETINOL Serum 2% – Designed to brighten the skin and promote cell turnover.

Target Treatments

These types of treatments are designed to care for specific problems, such as acne. A great addition to any skincare routine, they allow you to customize your skincare and treat specific issues you may have. Many of the treatments contain active ingredients that can cause photo-sensitivity and should be applied at night and followed with topical sunscreens during the day to avoid potential irritations as indicated. These treatments may include peels, acne spot treatments, dark spot treatments, retinol, or even specialized masks.

Moisturizers

No matter what skin type you have, you should never skip the moisturizer. Your skin needs hydration and that is why you must moisturize it daily. There are tons of moisturizers available, and some are specially formulated for your specific skin type.

Here are some recommendations:

  • Restructuring Multi-Peptide Biotherapy Moisturizer – Intense hydration with contouring and sculpting peptides. Applicable for all skin types. Great for Anti-Aging and controlling oily skin.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is not just for going out for a day at the beach or amusement park. Our everyday exposure both indoors and out to UVA, UVB and blue light makes it an essential part of your daily skincare routine. It should be applied after your moisturizer but before you put on your makeup. This will help protect your skin from any damaging rays. Alternatively, you can even apply tinted sunscreens to substitute for your foundation.
