The Ultimate Guide to Botox for Men

by | Mar 13, 2020 | Botox Education, Injectables, Procedures

Botox, or Botulinum toxin, is a highly sought-after cosmetic procedure to reverse signs of aging. While this treatment procedure is very popular among women, it is also used by men. This injection is designed to help a person put their best face forward, regardless of gender. As the stigma around men getting cosmetic treatments dissipates, more men than ever have begun reaping the benefits of Botox.

A few of the top questions circling Botox treatment are, “Is Botox for men?” and “Is Botox safe?”. In this guide, we will answer these questions, and much more.

What Is Botox?

Botox is created from Botulinum toxin. This neurotoxin is approved by the FDA to treat fine lines and wrinkles. Though it may sound daunting, the neurotoxin is only used in very small amounts. While it is common for Botox to be used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, it has medical uses, as well.

When used in small amounts, Botox relaxes the muscles. This relaxing of these muscles leads to a decreased wrinkles on the skin at the surface because the muscles no longer scrunch up the skin that lays above it. Typically, men are more susceptible to deeper wrinkles in certain areas, including around the eyes and on the forehead. Botox for men may prove a viable solution.

Botox For Men

There are many different reasons someone may consider Botox as a treatment option for men. Some men want to get an edge up on the competition in the corporate world. Younger colleagues may boast more youthful looks, which can help them advance career opportunities. Botox can erase the look of anger, tiredness, or sadness that can develop with aging skin and can, therefore, make a man more approachable.

Many men choose Botox as a cosmetic treatment option to boost their self-confidence and improve their overall self-esteem. The natural aging process can be disheartening, especially when it comes to our skin. Even men who are in their mid- to late-twenties may experience significant wrinkling and drooping of the skin. Botox may be recommended as a preventative measure to ward off fine lines and wrinkles. There’s no doubt that looking less tired, sad, and angry can improve approachability and relationships at work and outside. Even 2-year-olds don’t like to approach someone with a negative vibe.

Non-Invasive Treatment Option for Wrinkles

Botox can be an excellent solution for men who do not want to undergo surgical procedures to correct fine lines and wrinkles. Surgical solutions often come with a greater margin of risk, an extended recovery time, and anesthesia. Surgical options can be daunting for some and maybe inconvenient, especially due to the downtime required from work.

Botox is a nonsurgical treatment option. Typically, during this procedure, patients receive little to no anesthesia. Depending on the areas injected, the entire process may only take a matter of minutes. The treatment may cause slight swelling or bruising, but these risks are not very common as compared to fillers and some other injections. Most men can return to work the same day the treatment is performed. There is generally no recovery time for Botox treatments.

Botox vs. Fillers

Although Botox and fillers are often used at the same time, they are different treatment options. These two treatment options are sometimes used together to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox and fillers that incorporate hyaluronic acid are designed to address different types of wrinkles in a different manner.

Some wrinkles appear on the face when the face rests. These wrinkles do not go away, even when facial muscles are relaxed. Some wrinkles appear when the face engages in movement or when muscles are used. While Botox targets relaxation of muscles, fillers help plump- up and add firmness to the skin to help improve resting wrinkles. Fillers fill in wrinkles, as opposed to relaxing the muscles underneath. When choosing a cosmetic provider, make sure to do research and select someone reputable. A healthcare professional can determine the right treatment procedure for your needs.

How Is the Procedure Performed?

When you meet with your cosmetic provider, he/she will provide an evaluation. This evaluation will go over many facets of the treatment process. The cosmetic provider will discuss your medical history and any expectations you have for the procedure. Based on your health and overall goals, the medical professional may recommend another treatment option that is a better fit. Candidates for Botox injections will be pleased to know that there is usually no recovery time.

Your cosmetic provider can determine which areas need Botox injections. A fine-tipped needle is inserted into the skin, directly into the muscles. Due to the small size of the needle, patients generally experience very limited discomfort. Anesthesia is not usually needed but may be administered upon request. Each patient can experience different results. Results from Botox are not typically immediately visible. Botox starts a process within the muscles that can take up to two weeks to take full effect. After the procedure, your cosmetic provider will inform you of any precautions you need to take or guidelines you should follow.

Are There Any Side Effects?

While Botox is a nonsurgical procedure, patients may still experience some side effects following the procedure. However, these side effects are relatively minimal and typically go away within a few days. The most common side effects that patients experience are swelling or bruising at the injection site. Your medical provider will give you aftercare guidelines to help you deal with any possible side effects that may develop.

How Long Does an Injection Last?

The treatment procedure known as Botox is not considered a permanent solution. The benefits of Botox typically last around three to four months. This timeframe depends on a variety of factors. Muscle movement eventually returns, and the skin above begins to show signs of wrinkling. Multiple treatment sessions are generally recommended to maintain effectiveness. Over time, the muscle atrophy weakens and a patient may require fewer treatment sessions.

Alternative Options

There are a variety of competitors to Botox that you could consider, including Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. All of which are “neuromodulators” aka wrinkle relaxers. These alternatives to botox are made by different competitor companies.

Patients may react better to one over another. Botox is the household name for this group of products. Why? Because Botox has been on the market for many years, it has loads of clinical studies, and it is FDA approved.

  • Dysport came into the market after Botox and received a good amount of following as well. It seems to diffuse a bit more and kick in a little bit faster than Botox.
  • Xeomin has a smaller amount of protein which some patients prefer.
  • Jeuveau is the newest neuromodulator on the market as it came out in 2019. It was initially known as #newtox and is now being referred to as “modern made tox”.

The best way to know which product works best for you:

  • Inject equal amounts of units
  • By the same injector
  • In the same area
  • Note the strength and longevity

Is Botox Right for Me?

Speaking with a cosmetic provider can determine whether you are a candidate for Botox. People who experience certain neurological or muscular diseases or are allergic to albumin may not be candidates. Expectations and goals for the procedure may also dictate whether the procedure is right for you.

The professionals at Cosmetic Injectables Center take pride in creating individualized treatment plans for their patients. Their dedicated team can determine if Botox or an alternative neuromodulator is right for you.
