What Some Injection Companies/Med Spas Don’t Want You to Know

by | Injectables

Doesn’t it seem like every day there’s a new injection provider or med spa? This can make it really hard to know which facility or provider to select for injectable treatments. At the same time, selecting a reputable and qualified injector is a big part of ensuring that you have an effective and safe procedure. While most are reliable and have strong ethical standards, there are some that are duplicitous and that only do business for a short period of time. We all want to avoid the latter! Here are some things that this type of provider might not want you to know and some things you should keep in mind to avoid this type of med spa:

The agent being injected might not be what you requested.

While it’s hard to imagine med spas doing this, we’ve all heard stories about some that have been closed down because they have used imported, non-FDA approved products. Making it even harder to navigate this industry, sometimes one of a company’s locations might use genuine products, while others interchange products due to ease of transportation or better pricing. This isn’t necessarily harmful, but still, it’s always important to know which brand of the product you are using and to ensure that you are always receiving FDA-approved products.

There are a couple of ways that you can protect yourself from this type of behavior. First, watch out for whether the product is reconstituted in front of you, which provides a strong indication that the vial is genuine. Second, ask for a sticker from the bottle if it’s Botox. Did you know that there are two removable stickers on every bottle that provide both the lot number and the expiration date? This is an easy and reliable way to know what you’re getting.

The product might not be fresh.

The official recommendation from manufacturers is that any opened vials should be used within 24 hours of being opened. While the product may still be effective as many as two weeks after being opened, the longevity of the results might be affected, especially if it’s not stored properly. Who wants product that’s been sitting open for days? It’s definitely not worth the risks.

One easy way you can help guard against this issue is by using a provider that does a high volume of business. If the office goes through multiple vials in a day, it’s much less likely that you’re going to get dated products.

The product might be over-diluted.

Unfortunately, some offices reconstitute products with more diluent than recommended. The problem is, in order to deliver the correct number of units, they have to inject more volume. This can cause dispersion of the product into unintended muscles and can potentially shorten the duration of the results. No good!

To ensure this isn’t happening, don’t be afraid to ask your injector how much diluent they use to reconstitute their product.

The nurse might not be adequately trained in the specific procedure.

Let’s not forget that risks do exist with injectables products. After all, they are still medical procedures. So, it’s important that your injector thoroughly understands both anatomy and the differences between filler products. For example, does your injector know which products attract water and expand? the proper elasticity or thickness in different facial areas? what areas are prone to swelling and potential allergy-based reactions? And so on.

Experience also helps your injector predict the outcome of procedures. As you can imagine, this is an important skill for an injector to have. Injectors with this ability can help you achieve a more fine-tuned result with fewer risks.

Make sure that you evaluate the comfort level of your injector when they’re talking about injection options as well as evaluating their confidence when handling a syringe. Doing this might give you a sense of their experience and expertise. It’s entirely appropriate to ask your injector about their qualifications, so don’t hesitate to get this information before receiving treatment.

The medical director is not an expert in injectables or is too far away to be reached quickly.

As we already talked about, injections are medical procedures with potential complications. The good news is that most of these complications are treatable when handled correctly. Infections, allergic reactions, scar tissue formation and occlusion of a blood vessel are rare but possible reactions. With the proper use of reversal agents, antibiotics, steroids and other available treatments, most of these complications can easily be addressed. But keep in mind, it’s important that your provider’s medical director has the proper knowledge and is readily accessible in order to address any such complications.

Prior to receiving an injection, ask about the experience level of the medical director and determine whether he or she is onsite or quickly available as needed.

Hopefully, these tips will help to ensure that you’re only receiving injectable treatments at reputable med-spas that meet all industry standards. At Cosmetic Injectables, we use extra caution to ensure patient safety by utilizing aseptic techniques, properly sterilizing instruments, only using FDA-approved products and by following all industry rules and best practices.
