The 4 Most Effective Ingredients Your Skin Care Should Have

by | Injectables

With SO many different skin care products on the market, it can be difficult to choose products with confidence. These products are often on the pricey side…you don’t want to waste upwards of a hundred dollars just to find out a particular product isn’t effective for you. Beyond the brand names and claims, there are so many anti-aging ingredients—some of which are just as hard to pronounce (i.e. hyaluronic acid). So how do you know which ones are right for your skin type? Which are the most effective? We’ve decided to make it easy and break it all down for you.

In this blog, we’ll be covering the following 4 ingredients, which are the best fail-safe and effective ingredients when choosing your skin treatment plan: Retin-A, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and peptides.

Retin-A

Perhaps the best known anti-aging ingredient, Retin-A, or retinol, are forms of vitamin A. Retin-A is a powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals and reduces the signs of skin aging. When prescribed in 0.025 percent or higher, it can stimulate cell turnover, help improve the skin’s texture and tone, reduce fine lines, and help ward off brown spots. It should be applied under makeup for maximum absorption. Retinol is not as potent, however, that makes it a good place to start for those with sensitive skin. When using any product with retinol or Retin-A inside, you should always use a sunscreen, as it does make the skin more susceptible to the sun. You can find it in cream, lotion, serum, and supplement form, in addition to injection form available from a dermatologist. Retinol, Retin-A, Tretinoic acid, and tretinoin are all different names of generic and brand name products in the same Vitamin A family. These have a long record of safety and have been in use for decades. A large number of reputable studies have confirmed the anti-aging effects of this class of creams on the skin.

Vitamin C

When you think of vitamin C, you probably picture a glass of orange juice or a supplement to prevent a cold. But did you know vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a powerful anti-aging skin care ingredient? Vitamin C, like retinol, is another antioxidant. It protects the skin from environmental pollutants, including UV exposure (photoaging). Vitamin C helps reduce the effects of aging by increasing the skin’s collagen. It also helps to make the skin’s appearance supple, and aides in reducing fine lines and wrinkles. One studyfound that using a vitamin C serum helped reduce the effects of aging by correcting structural changes that occur due to aging.

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan, packs a powerful punch as a moisturizer. It is a clear, lubricating substance (a polysaccharide, or type of carbohydrate, to be specific) naturally produced by the body. Mainly located in the skin, joints, and eye sockets, hyaluronic acid is the main contributor in keeping skin youthful and hydrated, while lubricating other body parts. The amount of hyaluronic acid in skin diminishes as we age, most significantly after the age of 40. Hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, which is what makes it so well suited to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It can also help with wound repair.

Peptides

Peptides are amino acids that make up the proteins in the skin. Over time, as part of the natural aging process, your skin system slows the production of these proteins. Peptides in skin care products should boost your skin’s natural communication system, to aid in cell rejuvenation by repairing cell structure. Peptides also stimulate collagen production, which can result in tightened skin. These are usually available in cream or serum form. The results with peptide use are gradual and may take up to 1-3 months to work.
No matter which ingredient you choose to try for your skin care routine, stick with the product for the recommended amount of time in order to see results. Remember, many products don’t promise or deliver immediate results. Some may take weeks or months before you see any difference, but once the product starts working its magic, the results will leave you feeling youthful and vibrant again.
