Stress And Hair Loss

by | Injectables

Can stress really make your hair fall out? Hair loss is known medically as alopecia, and there are several types caused by stress. This can happen to both men and women of any age.

Types of Hair Loss Caused by Stress

Telogen effluvium: If you’re noticing that your hair is thinning in patches on your head, it may be telogen effluvium (TE). This is where a certain percentage of hair follicles stop producing hair. Stress can trigger this condition or make it worse.

Alopecia areata: Another form of hair loss, alopecia areata, is an autoimmune disease, which can also be triggered by stress. When suffering from an autoimmune disease, your body is attacking itself, and with alopecia areata, the body attacks the hair follicles. It is also known as spot baldness.

Androgenic alopecia: This type of hair loss is hereditary and probably the one most are familiar with…the thinning or loss of hair with age. Male pattern and female pattern baldness fall under this category. Hair follicles begin to decrease in circumference little by little as we age. This type depends on your genes; however, stress is known to speed up the process.

Trichotillomania: Another type of hair loss is caused by trichotillomania. This is a disorder that causes a person to pull out their own hair. Stress can trigger pulling or make pulling worse.

Hair Loss Solutions

If you’re suffering from hair loss due to stress, what can you do to help it? The good news is, hair follicles never go away. They just stop producing hair for various reasons. One great treatment option is microneedling. Fear not; Despite the name, it does not feel like getting a shot. Microneedling is a treatment administered by a Nurse that utilizes a pen-like instrument containing many very tiny needles that pierce only the very top layers of skin. Microneedling is typically used for reducing wrinkles and acne scars, however, it can also be used to stimulate hair growth as an effective hair loss treatment. This is especially true when paired with MesoHairGro serum, which contains active ingredients to help combat male pattern baldness.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are another hair loss solution for those suffering from stress-related hair loss. In this procedure, your own plasma is extracted from your blood and injected into your scalp to stimulate stem cell growth in the hair root which stimulates hair production.

NOTE: Neither of the above options will help to stimulate hair growth for individuals suffering from Trichotillomania. Cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to effectively help treat Trichotillomania, as well as some medications that address the underlying stress, depression and other various cause(s).

If you’re suffering from thinning hair or hair loss, consult with your doctor about your options for cosmetic treatment.
