The Magic Of Microneedling
You’ve probably heard of microneedling. This magical procedure has been getting a lot of attention these days, especially with celebrities starting to go under the needle. As we learn more and more about naturally creating healthy, youthful-looking skin, the benefits of microneedling make it a great candidate for easy and effective skin rejuvenation.
What is microneedling?
Microneedling is an anti-aging treatment that eliminates and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It can also be used to treat a number of other marks on the skin, including acne scars and large pores, as well as stretch marks.
Where can microneedling be used?
Microneedling is considered safe for all skin types, and patients typically ask for the procedure to be done on the face. However, we can also perform it in other areas, like the thighs, arms, or stomach. Microneedling can be used to improve the appearance of your skin virtually anywhere on your body.
How does it work?
Over time, your collagen and elastin—the substances that keep your skin looking smooth and youthful—can stop working as effectively. This can happen in parts of your body due to aging, damage from the sun or from acne, or due to scarring from pregnancy or surgeries.
Microneedling works through something called collagen induction therapy, helping boost the collagen and elastin in your skin. The process helps your skin to recover the youthful appearance you once had, allowing the skin to regenerate and repair itself.
What’s a microneedling procedure like?
During the procedure, we’ll use a special device called a microneedling pen. This pen has tiny needles that create miniscule perforations on the uppermost layer of your skin. This minor injury spurs the body to heal itself, stimulating the body’s natural mechanisms to repair the damage. (Note that some people try to duplicate this process at home using rollers, but the mechanical microneedling pen is what really makes the difference.)
As we mentioned above, the microneedling pen also boosts the production of those two crucial building blocks, collagen and elastin. The process usually takes between twenty and thirty minutes. After finishing, we will apply a vitamin serum to your skin to help stimulate the healing process.
One of the best, most magical things about microneedling? There’s NO downtime. Even better, there’s little to no pain. During the procedure, your skin will be numbed so that the minor skin damage doesn’t hurt. You may experience a little discomfort, and some patients mention that the sensation of the microneedling pen feels warm, but the procedure itself will not be painful.
What happens after?
Once you’ve finished the procedure, your skin will look a little pink and sunburned for the next few days, depending on the patient. Like a sunburn, your skin might also start to peel a little during this time, or it may look flaky. During this time, you can shower as normal, and you can use sunscreen, cleansers, and makeup products as well. Over the next few days and weeks, you’ll start to notice your skin has become firmer, and you should also see improvements in the texture and appearance.
We often advise patients to come in for somewhere between three to six treatments total, about once a month. Of course, this depends on your skin, as well as your treatment goals, so we can let you know the specifics for you in a private consultation.
