Botox for TMJ Sherman Oaks

TMJ is an acronym that stands for temporomandibular joints. These two joints are on both sides of the face, located directly in front of the ears, connecting the lower jaw bone to the skull and assisting in movements such as speaking and chewing. Another name for TMJ is TMD which stands for temporomandibular joint disorder, and the two are used interchangeably. For most, the term “TMJ” refers to essentially any type of dysfunction or pain involving the masseter muscles or the temporomandibular joint.

There are many causes for TMJ dysfunction, such as teeth grinding or clenching, stress, acute trauma, or dislocation between the ball and socket of the joint. Symptoms of TMJ dysfunction include jaw pain, headaches, earaches, pain in the shoulders and neck, clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth, tinnitus, swelling on the sides of the face, difficulty chewing, and tooth pain. Botox and other neuromodulators such as Dysport and Daxi can be used to treat TMJ dysfunction by blocking nerve signals and relaxing the TMJ muscles.

Treating TMJ with neuromodulators brings temporary relief to the often painful symptoms of TMJ by relaxing the tightened and tense jaw muscles. In addition to relieving the pain and symptoms associated with TMJ, treating the TMJ muscles with neuromodulators can slim the face and make it look more youthful. Because TMJ causes the jaw muscles to become tense, overworked, and bulky due to overuse, the visual effect on the face can be that it causes your jaw to appear wider. These muscles can be relaxed by treating TMJ with neuromodulators, thus slimming the jaw area.

Our providers can diagnose the proper amount of units needed to treat different TMJ cases based on the anatomy and assessment of each individual. We make sure to avoid over-treatment or under-treatment if a modified dose is required to treat the TMJ dysfunction.

During the Procedure

When you arrive for your appointment at Cosmetic Injectables Center in Sherman Oaks, you must fill out a brief questionnaire about your medical history or any allergies you may have. (This questionnaire can also be filled out ahead of time via an email address link that our staff will send) Once you have completed the questionnaire, you will sit comfortably in one of our treatment rooms. At the same time, you will discuss your concerns with one of our providers regarding TMJ, who will help discuss which neuromodulator to choose and how many units to treat the area based on your goals. The procedure is very brief and nearly pain-free, lasting anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. Once the procedure is completed, you can go about your day with virtually no downtime.

Aftercare & Recovery

After being treated with neuromodulators, you should wait at least 4 hours before heat exposure, exercising, lying down, or bending over. You may move the jaw muscles by clenching your jaw twice every 15 min for four hours only to encourage the uptake of Botox into your TMJ muscles. Please avoid touching the injection sites with your fingers to reduce the risk of infection.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Individuals struggling with TMJ pain, grinding, or migraine are ideal candidates for treatment in this region with neuromodulators such as Botox and Daxi. Please be aware that if there is any joint or cartilage damage, neuromodulators may not be able to correct those issues. Sometimes, the relaxation of the muscles with neuromodulators removes the pressure of the muscles pushing the jaw bone into the joint socket. This may allow some healing when there’s minimal damage. But for chronic issues or those with advanced joint disease, further procedures may be necessary.

We recommend against any Botox injections for individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding. People who are allergic to the ingredients in Botox should inform their provider of this so that they may suggest alternative treatments. Individuals with neuromuscular disorders such as ALS or myasthenia gravis are also recommended against treatment with neuromodulators like Botox as it may exacerbate these conditions.

Botox for TMJ vs. Alternative Procedures

Non-invasive solutions for TMJ would be regular usage of NSAIDs like Advil or Aleve. Another option that a dentist might recommend might be to wear a splint or night guard. In more severe situations, a doctor might prescribe anti-anxiety medication, muscle relaxants, or even a low dose of antidepressants to help reduce the pain associated with TMJ. Sometimes a doctor will suggest corrective dental surgery to treat TMJ if the cause of the issue is an improper dental alignment or balance. Other treatments available for TMJ include transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation or TENS. TENS is a type of therapy that uses low-level electrical currents to relax the jaw joint and facial muscles, thus reducing pain in the area. For the most severe of cases, TMJ surgery might be recommended by a healthcare professional. Our expert providers will be able to assess with you in an in-person consultation the severity of your TMJ and determine which treatment plan would best suit your needs.

Botox for TMJ Reviews

“TMJ relief!!! So I did a lot of research before choosing the amazing, kind and truly talented Dr Soleiman. I came in to her office in extreme pain, after a year of not being able to eat on my left side I came in pretty miserable. I had seen a  Dental Surgeon who said I would need Botox and cortisone shots. I also went to my dentist to do another X-ray make sure that my cartilage was worn down. So we started with Botox along my jawline on both sides and also in the joint area. After two Botox treatments we started working on the muscle under my jaw down my neck… the Relief I have is unbelievable. I can eat and sleep and not take Advile everyday. So if you have TMJ pain, I would highly recommend Dr Soleiman. Also I must mention that her staff are so sweet and they check in on you the next day and her new office is beautiful. I did not get paid or any compensation for this review as I know that is a “thing” on some websites.”

Botox for TMJ FAQs

How long does Botox for TMJ last?

The average longevity for Botox for TMJ is around six months. Various factors determine how long Botox for TMJ lasts, such as how strong the TMJ muscles are, how much product was used, and the individual’s anatomy, physiology, hormonal levels, and metabolism.

Where do they inject Botox for TMJ?

Botox for TMJ is injected into the masseter muscle located on either side of the jaw.

How much Botox do you need for TMJ?

Anywhere between twenty-five and fifty units of Botox are needed per side. Some individuals can see results from lower doses. However, typically, between twenty-five and fifty units are necessary for effective results.

Can Botox for TMJ change your smile?

Suppose the injection disperses (due to patient anatomy, excessive diluent, or wrong product choice). In that case, Botox in the jaw can affect the risorius muscle located in the mid-cheek and therefore impact smiling on that side of the face.

Do dentists do Botox for TMJ?

Some dentists who have taken courses in Botox can perform TMJ treatment. As long as your injector is experienced in this procedure, then it can be a safe treatment. At Cosmetic Injectables Center in Sherman Oaks, our providers regularly perform this procedure and are highly skilled at reducing the risks.

Does Botox for TMJ change your face shape?

Botox for TMJ can have the added benefit of slimming the jawline if done in high enough amounts to reduce muscle hypertrophy.

Can Botox fix a clicking jaw?

Depending upon the cause of the clicking, Botox can fix a clicking jaw. If joint damage has already occurred, Botox may not be able to reverse the damage to the joint. However, Botox decreases the pressure on that joint and can potentially reduce the clicking sound. Botox can also reduce the ongoing damage to that joint from excessively grinding or clenching the jaw.

Does Botox in the jaw hurt?

Botox injections in the jaw area are usually one of the least painful locations of Botox treatment on the face. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by the lack of discomfort from injections.

Does TMJ change your face shape?

If there is hypertrophy (growth of muscle) causing the masseter muscles to enlarge, then yes, TMJ can widen the shape of the jaw. If the TMJ disorder resides in the cartilage, or if there is an irregular angle of the jaw as it locks into its socket, then there may not be a change to the shape of the face without the muscle involvement or swelling.

What does Botox in the jaw do?

Botox reduces the strength of the jaw muscle, so there is less grinding at night. Hence, when a muscle is not being worked as hard, its size reduces. Similarly, if you lift weights in your biceps and stop lifting weights, your biceps will decrease in size.
