What Is Kybella?
Kybella is an FDA-approved prescription medicine injected in adults to improve the appearance and profile of submental fat below the chin, also called “double chin.” Kybella was created by Allergan, the company that makes Botox and Juvederm. Allergan is no stranger to the cosmetic world – it has a strong history of providing effective treatments to enhance the facial profile.
The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat such as the submental fat underneath the chin.
What is Submental Fat?
Submental fat is the accumulation of fat underneath the chin. Leading causes include:
- Natural aging process
A 2015 survey done by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) suggests that 67% of Americans are unhappy with the submental fullness of their lower face. Prior to Kybella, the only way to remove submental fat was through invasive procedures like liposuction or facial neck lift surgery. Now, it’s possible to achieve permanent results in a non-invasive way.
How Does Kybella Work?
Kybella works by destroying the fat cells at the injection site under the chin. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store fat. The procedure takes about 10 minutes to perform, and recovery takes about six weeks. We recommend that a patient undergo at least three separate treatments.
Benefits of Kybella
- Quick Treatment Option – Injections only take about 10 to 15 minutes to complete.
- Minimal Downtime – You will be able to return your normal activities as soon as you are ready.
- Effective Results – Results can be seen after as little as one treatment.
- Permanent Results – Kybella destroys the fat cells for good, meaning you won’t have to worry about constant upkeep.
- Non-Invasive – These injections don’t require any incisions.
What To Expect With Kybella
We require you complete a consultation with us at Cosmetic Injectables Center before any treatment. Our professionals will do a thorough examination of the area and develop the most effective treatment plan for you. You’ll know exactly what to expect at every step of the procedure.
How Is Kybella Administered?
One of our master injectors here at Cosmetic Injectables Center will perform your Kybella injections. Each treatment session will only take about 10 to 15 minutes in total.
Firstly, your injector will map out the injection points on the skin below your chin. The precise number of injections will depend on the amount of fat you have under your chin, as well as the desired results. Then, the injections will be administered at each marked point.
What Are The Side Effects?
Common side effects of Kybella include swelling, bruising, pain, redness, and areas of hardness in the treatment area. These side effects may last up to a month. Patients may also experience temporary numbness in the area, which can help subsequent Kybella procedures to be more comfortable.
How Many Kybella Treatments Will I Need?
Everyone differs when it comes to the number of treatments needed to achieve the desired results. Your treatment plan will include the recommended number of sessions. The amount of sessions will be based both on the amount and distribution of submental fat and your own cosmetic goals.
You may undergo up to six treatments, each spaced six weeks apart. We recommend at least three treatments on average.
