Wrinkle Treatment: When Do You Really Need It?
Whether you’re just starting to notice the first hints of crow’s feet when you smile, or you feel like those deep forehead lines crept up on you overnight, it’s very common to wonder when you should go for dermal fillers or Botox. If you’re on the fence about whether it’s time for treatment or not, it’s likely you’re early in your aging journey. Some assume they’re too young, while others wonder if they should wait until the signs of aging are many and making a very visible difference before they even consider injectables. In this blog, we’ll use our years of industry experience to share when the best time to get dermal fillers or Botox is.
Quick reminder- Botox relaxes the muscles in the face which helps with wrinkles, while fillers add volume to the face in places where volume may be lacking (a common issue with aging). There are also other anti-aging treatments available, such as NovaThreads, that stimulate collagen production in the skin.
As with other procedures, this is not exactly about age. Some may start developing wrinkles as young as in their early 20’s, while others may be lucky enough to not see so much as a fine line until well into their 30’s. A lot depends on factors such as sun exposure, tanning bed history, smoking, stress, genetics, and even hydration levels and how you sleep.
Dynamic of Static Wrinkle?
You also should consider whether your wrinkles are dynamic or static. Dynamic means they occur only when your face is in movement. Examples would be a crease between your brows while thinking or laugh lines that appear only when you’re laughing. Static wrinkles are wrinkles that are etched into your skin, such as crow’s feet or laugh lines, that remain even when your face is at rest. Dynamic wrinkles can begin as soon as the early ’20s, but are more likely to occur late 20’s-early 30’s. Static wrinkles generally show up in the early-mid ’30s, but again, either of these types can occur either later or earlier depending on the factors listed above. Patients come in more often for the treatment of static wrinkles; however, if all you have is dynamic wrinkles, we generally advise that the best time to get them fixed is when/if they bother you, and a good provider will help remedy them regardless of your age and severity. More importantly, using Botox early on helps to prevent dynamic lines from turning into static lines.
Signs Of Aging
Sometimes you may not exactly have wrinkles yet, but you can still have signs of aging. Some obvious ones are age spots, enlarged pores, and under-eye bags. But there are also changes that happen “behind the scenes” as well such as volume loss, loss of underlying tissue support and elasticity, thinning skin, bone structure changes, and more. A good provider can spot these changes, even the not-so-obvious ones, and recommend a good course of treatment.
When Should I Get Treatment?
So…when should you get Botox, dermal fillers, or other injectables? The answer lies with you. Just like when you found (or when you will find) your first gray hair…when you see those first wrinkles in the mirror, it can be like a jolt to your self-esteem, no matter how much you knew they were coming. If you feel like you’re not satisfied with how you look, don’t be afraid to look into injectables, and don’t assume they’re only for the middle-aged or older. This question is similar to asking “when should I get a nose job?” If your genetics has predisposed you to already have etched lines in your skin in your twenties, then that can be the right time to start. And on the flip side, if you are fortunate enough not to develop deep bending of your skin with facial movements, then you can wait until you see those movement lines before you start treating them. But do remember that prevention is very important. So don’t wait until those lines have etched into your skin!
A good provider knows how to remedy even the smallest of wrinkles so that you’re looking and feeling your best in no time. If you’re still unsure about fillers for your face, before and after pictures of treatments on people with slight wrinkles can help you visualize what you can expect in terms of how much of a difference to expect. Also, keep in mind how long fillers last…maybe you just want a quick session to get you through your next big event, or maybe you want more lasting results (some dermal fillers last up to a year).
