Botox Sherman Oaks

Botox (onabotulinumtoxin A) is manufactured by Allergan, the same company that makes Juvederm, Voluma, Vollure and Latisse. This neuromodulator was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for medical use in 1989 and it has since received cosmetic FDA approval for use in frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. Botox can also be used in an “off-label” context for both cosmetic and medical treatments beyond relaxing facial wrinkles. What Are The Recommended Doses for Botox?

Based on clinical trials, the standard FDA-approved and recommended dosage for Botox is 20 units for frown lines, 20 units for forehead lines, and 24 units for crows feet (12 units for each eye).

However, each dosage is tailored to the individual based on his or her needs. The most effective dosage for a patient is determined by:

  • Patient’s desired longevity of effects
  • Facial muscle size and strength
  • Sensitivity or resistance to the product

Your injection specialist will discuss their observations with you after the initial injections, and together you can decide which dose works best for you.

How Long Do Botox Injections Last?

Beautiful Woman Looking At The Mirror

When used in proper dosage, results typically last about 3 to 4 months in most areas. When used for treatment of masseter muscles (jaw muscles) and for underarm or hands sweating (hyperhydrosis), results typically last about 6 months. It’s important to remember that regardless of the Botox operation area, patients’ muscles vary in sensitivity – some may require higher doses to achieve the desired results.

What Are the Side Effects of Botox?

Botox injections are a minimally invasive procedure that has little to no side effects. Seeking injections from a master injector, such as those at Cosmetic Injectables Center, will drastically lessen the risk of having unwanted results.

There will be a small amount of pressure when you are receiving your injections, which will subside once your procedure is complete. Common side effects after injection tend to subside on their own within a few days. Side effects may include:

  • Pain at the injection site
  • Numbness
  • Redness, swelling, bruising, and irritation
  • Temporary headaches from needle insertion

In rare cases, you may experience asymmetric smile, lid droop, or heavy brows. You should call your provider immediately if any of these side effects develop.

What’s The Difference Between Botox and Fillers?

Practitioner Injecting Filler To Womans Face

Botox and other neuromodulators relax muscles. As such, the weakened muscles no longer contract and don’t crease the skin into wrinkles. Fillers on the other hand “fill” the area under the skin with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that adds volume to areas with depleted fat. By volumizing a deflated or underdeveloped area with fillers, we contour the face to rejuvenate a droopy or flat structure and lift the skin back up to its original position. Botox and fillers can also be used in combination to both tighten skin and add shape/volume to the same area.

Will Botox Work The Same As Other Neuromodulators?

Other neuromodulators like Dysport, Xeomin, Daxxify and Jeuveau work in the same way that Botox does, but patients may respond differently to each product because of slight differences in chemical makeup.

We have many patients ask which neuromodulator is best, but there is no right or wrong choice – what works for one person may not work for another. The only way to find out which product is best for you is to receive the comparable dose of each product in the same area by the same injector and note the differences in results and longevity.

At our office, we charge the same price for the comparable dose used for both Botox and Dysport. Let us know if you would like to try the different brands at each visit and decide for yourself which you like best.

Botox FAQs

Will I experience any side effects from BOTOX® Cosmetic?

The most common side effects include headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. Less frequently occurring (<3%) adverse reactions include pain in the face, erythema at the injection site, and muscle weakness.

Will my facial expressions continue to look natural?

Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is simply reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.

What will happen if I choose not to continue BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments?

If you do not continue BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments, the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows will gradually look like they did before treatment.

Is treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic painful?

Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Prior to injecting BOTOX® Cosmetic, your physician may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Many people return directly to work or normal activity following BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment.

Who should not use BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic should not be used in the presence of infection at the proposed injection site(s) and in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation.
